Lowry Hill resident Robinson (Rob) Brown received a plaque in recognition of his career in the Army as a training film producer at a special Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, November 11, at The Kenwood Senior Living Community in Minneapolis. Brown was among several other veterans who were honored at the ceremony.

Brown is 87 years old and lives at The Kenwood Senior Living Community. He has many interesting recollections from his time at the Army Pictorial Center at 35th Avenue and 35th Street in Astoria, Long Island City, Queens, New York. This studio was the home of filmmakers and still photographers who covered wars and who produced countless military training films.

At age 19, Brown began working in radio with Voice of America while he was a student at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. This led him to become a film and radio producer for the Army.

“It’s been 62 years since I became a veteran after my Army service,” said Brown. “The Kenwood staff and the Veterans Day programming fired up memories of what I had done all those decades ago. It came back to life and made me prouder of my sacrifice than ever before.”

The staff at The Kenwood honor veterans each year on Veterans Day. The event was attended by much of the community and Veterans look forward to the special day.

“Mr. Brown doesn’t often talk about his service, but during our Veterans Day program, his eyes really lit up,” said Jennifer Volkenant, Executive Director of The Kenwood. “You could tell the event brought back so many memories for him. It was truly special to see him honored alongside the other veterans in our community.”

The Kenwood Senior Living, located in the Lowry Hill neighborhood within the Calhoun-Isles community, is a rental retirement community which provides independent living and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services.
